The "Global Gender Gap Index" is an annual assessment that tracks the current status and progress of gender parity across four key areas: Economic Participation and Opportunity, Educational Attainment, Health and Survival, and Political Empowerment. The Index measures scores on a scale of 0 to 1, where the score reflects the extent of progress made toward closing the gender gap—essentially indicating the percentage of the gap that has been eliminated.
Coding rules
To quantify the gender gap, the Global Gender Gap Index is calculated based on a total of 14 social indicators across four areas. The index values are expressed as percentages, representing the level of equality achieved so far. It focuses on measuring gaps in outcome variables and ranks countries according to gender equality. Teorell et al. (2024:1315) define the variable as "The Global Gender Gap Index (0 to 1, where 1 indicates no gap) examines the gap between men and women in four fundamental categories (subindexes): Economic Participation and Opportunity, Educational Attainment, Health and Survival and Political Empowerment."
