This indicator reports the harmonized, English party name for the HoG party based on Party Facts, a collaborative online database of political parties worldwide that enhances the cross-comparability of data on political parties (Döring and Regel 2019).

Coding rules

  • A party ID is assigned if a party name or acronym was clearly stated in the sources. In case of doubt, external sources were consulted. If, however, a party affiliation was not mentioned at all or could not be determined unambiguously, depending on the title of the HoG either the country-specific Party Facts ID "technical" or "independent" was assigned.
  • If the HoG position in a country is usually taken by party members but the sources gave no hint for the focal HoG, the country-specific Party Facts ID "independent" is used.
  • The country-specific Party Facts ID "technical" was used to code non-party leaders like Kings/Queens/Regents, (Foreign) Military Leaders, Governor Generals/Governors/Commissioners etc., i.e. representatives of a Crown (in [former] colonies), or collective bodies (group of persons). While such positions are usually not taken by party affiliates, if a party affiliation was clearly mentioned in the sources it was still coded accordingly.
  • The variable v2exhoshog from V-Dem's main dataset was used to identify those years where the HoS is also the HoG. In these cases data for the HoG-variables (i.e. name, party affiliation and Party Facts ID) is set to missing.

Further coding rules can be found in Düpont, Döring, and Bederke 2021.
