This indicator measures the average number of years a newborn infant would live, assuming that current mortality rates remain unchanged throughout their lifetime.
Coding rules
- "Life expectancy at birth" is the average number of years a newborn is expected to live, assuming that age-specific mortality rates remain constant over their lifetime. Since the actual death rates of any birth cohort cannot be predicted in advance, life expectancy is estimated based on current mortality rates. If death rates decline, the actual lifespan of individuals will likely exceed the life expectancy calculated using current rates. This indicator is typically measured in years.
- Teorell et al. (2024:1548) defines the variable as "Life expectancy at birth indicates the number of years a newborn infant would live if prevailing patterns of mortality at the time of its birth were to stay the same throughout its life."
