|description = This indicator measures the expenditure on the health care function "long-term care (health and social)” (SHA HC.3 and HCR.1)  by the health care financing schemes "rest of the world financing schemes" (SHA HF.4) in million national currency units in percentage of the gross domestic product (GDP) following the System of Health Accounts (SHA; OECD et al. 2011).
Expenditure refers to the payments related to the final consumption of all health care goods and services by the resident units.
Long-term care (health) consists of a range of medical and personal care services that are consumed with the primary goal of alleviating pain and suffering and reducing or managing the deterioration in health status in patients with a degree of long-term dependency.
The function long-term care (social) comprises the expenditure on lower-level social care services to assist with instrumental activities of daily living (such as home-help, meals on wheels, transport and day centres, etc.). As the health care components of long-term care are contained in HC.3, the complementary social components are included as a health care-related category that is further subdivided into in-kind and in-cash components.
Rest of the world financing schemes comprise financial arrangements involving institutional units (or managed by institutional units) that are resident abroad, but who collect, pool resources and purchase health care goods and services on behalf of residents, without transiting their funds through a resident scheme.
The indicator represents the share of long-term care (health and social) expenditure of these transnational arrangements in relation to national income.
