"Population per square kilometre" measures the population density. It is defined as the number of people per square kilometer. Thus, the ratio between the annual average population and the land area. The land area concept (excluding inland waters) is used wherever available.

Coding rules

"Population per square kilometre" refers to the number of individuals per square kilometer. It is calculated as the ratio of the annual average population to the land area. When calculating population density, the land area (which excludes bodies of inland water such as lakes and rivers) is used, if available. However, in some EU countries, the total area, including lakes and rivers, is used for the calculation, as this is the only data available. Teorell et al. (2024:565) define the variable as "Population density, average population per square km".
