The indicator referes to the participation in the International Large Scale Assesment called: Progress in International Reading Literacy Study (PIRLS). The study is conducted every five years since 2001. PIRLS provides trends and international comparisons of fourth grade students’ reading achievement and students’ competencies in relation to goals and standards for reading education. It is administered by the IEA (International Association for the Evaluation of Educational Achievement), which is an international cooperative of national research institutions, governmental research agencies, scholars, and analysts working to research education worldwide.
Coding rules
Participation in one of the studies is coded with 1. All are combined in this indicator. If only a part of the mentioned country took part, we still code it as the larger entity. For example for participation of Dubai, we code the United Arab Emirates.
