This indicator measures the expenditure on the health care function "long-term care (health)" (SHA HC.3) by the health care financing scheme "household out-of-pocket payment" (SHA HF.3) in percentage of the gross domestic product (GDP) following the System of Health Accounts (SHA; OECD et al. 2011). Expenditure refers to the payments related to the final consumption of all health care goods and services by the resident units. Long-term care (health) consists of a range of medical and personal care services that are consumed with the primary goal of alleviating pain and suffering and reducing or managing the deterioration in health status in patients with a degree of long-term dependency. The health care financing scheme household out-of-pocket payment comprises a direct payment for services from the household primary income or savings (no third-party payer is involved): the payment is made by the user at the time of the use of services. Included are cost-sharing and informal payments (both in cash and kind). The indicator represents the share of long-term care (health) expenditure by household out-of-pocket payments in relation to national income. The national GDP is used in euro as available in the EUROSTAT database.
