The variable is coded following the Art.13 of the Medical Care and Sickness Benefits Convention (1969) of the International Labor Organization –ILO–, which establishes the categories of services that medical care must comprise. This indicator is defined as pharmaceuticals as in subsection (c) of the mentioned article encompassing the following codes: pharmaceuticals.
The code pharmaceuticals (312) refers to “Medicines and other medical goods are frequently a component of a package of services with a preventive, curative, rehabilitative or long-term care purpose.” (OECD System of Health Accounts, p. 97). The code “pharmaceuticals” refers to “pharmaceutical products and non-durable medical goods intended for use in the diagnosis, cure, mitigation or treatment of disease” (OECD System of Health Accounts, p. 97) prescribed by physicians or other qualified health personnel and dispensed in pharmacies.
